2014 CROSS¡¤OVER¥²

Hong, Ji su (Ph,D of Art studies, Ceramic Critic)

Human conduct and natural phenomenon were interpreted and evaluated as providence or message of God during the Medieval Times, the age of God. During that time, art was recognized as visual method of delivering message of God or doctrine to illiterate people and architectural elements ornamenting the church, the celestial world on earth, rather than and end in itself. The Cross was the most important icon symbolizing Jesus Christ¡¯s suffering and spiritual salvation. Early Christian Art, the cross was emblem of horrific death penalty tool and humiliating death which everyone shunned, but it got settled as sign of faith, realization of religious spirituality in real world and salvation of mankind, when christian icon was systemized clearly based upon the subject of the New Testament. This symbol of ¡®crucified Jesus Christ¡¯ has been reinterpreted endlessly by artists with their imagination and wit throughout the creation and destruction of numerous cultural era.

As an extension of context, the third year of <CROSS¡¤OVER III> exhibition examines relationship between religion and art in today and further ascertains both novel interpretation and diverse __EXPRESSION__ of artists in one place. The Cross is functioned as common subject and minimum assessment tool of artists¡¯ capability, various interpretation and their oeuvre in this exhibition. Over 63 artists, who delve deeper into their own distinctive style of work made with major material such as ceramic and glass, cogitate on form and meaning of Cross icon on top of technical expertise and skilled craftsmanship in order to present new cross to the world. Turning natural material into ¡®something useful object¡¯, ¡®valuable artwork¡¯ by artists somewhat resembles God creating human with a handful of clay. There must be special meaning and intension rather than showing artists¡¯ religious faith and calling,

In religious aspect, artists reproduce the cross for meditating their inner life, that is to say spiritual life, and expand their boundary of visual art through creativity and rise of sensation at the same time. For those who seek for some other meanings beyond religious icon of cross, some catches a glimpse of our various life through two straight lines crossing at right angles, seek for healing and derives highly refined symbolic world in semiotics. Eventually, the cross comes into view as functional work realized practicality by artists intention and art work representing artist¡¯s personal reason arousing audience¡¯s esthetical experience.

63 artists who seek materials from nature, build by hand, obtain color, rigidity and texture through fire, presented their different thoughts, sensibility and ways of communication within cross-shaped spectrum. Research and comprehension in new material are demanded more than immersion in specific material and technique in crafts today. It is exciting to see cross works how the subject was interpreted, how mediums, ceramic and glass, are treated and how the limit of __EXPRESSION__ was expanded by combining other material to the utmost of artists¡¯ individuality and ability. Encounter between religion and art familiar but unusual makes us to face abruptly the expanded world, artists¡¯ deep cogitation and world of creation.
